THAI-yo na sa Red Ginger - WTF Food Review

The classy Thai restaurant, Red Ginger in City of Dreams
The classy Thai restaurant, Red Ginger in City of Dreams
My wife and I are regular customers in City of Dreams and I've been wanting to try out the restaurants here ever since. Thinking that it will be expensive, I've decided to opt for something cheaper. One bright day, when my parents visited my in-laws, who were staying in the City of Dreams as well, we have decided to have lunch in one of the restaurants there, Red Ginger.

The exterior of the restaurant itself is great, it is somewhat like an open area and it is well lit and air-conditioned. Good thing that there were no smokers in the vicinity since City of Dreams is a heck of a smoking area.

The waitstaffs are dressed neatly, the ambiance is relaxing and easy to the eyes. The menu looks well written, short and very straightforward. You won't be bombarded with tons of selections, instead, you will be presented with an organized menu.

After thoroughly examining the menu and bugging the waiters which one is which, we finally found our target.
Red Ginger - Mixed Green Salad (PHP280)
Mixed Green Salad (PHP280)
We started with a light appetizer and a salad bowl. The clan of Teofisto's are mostly omnivores, even though we love meat so much, we also love our veggies and fruits in an equal manner. First off, the Mixed Green Salad (PHP280), a mix of radish, lettuce, cucumber, red onion, kesong puti, and cashew nuts. The dressing is kind of new to me since I don't have much experience when it comes to Thai-cooking, I can taste authentic Thai fish sauce with lime and a hint of coriander. The kesong puti up-ed the dish a hundred times more, but mind you, this comes from a guy who loves kesong puti.
Red Ginger - Salt & Pepper Tofu (PHP280)
Salt & Pepper Tofu (PHP280)
The Salt & Pepper Tofu (PHP280) was "Ok" for me, my mom's Fried Oyster Tofu is still the best tofu dish for me. Going back, they use Silken tofu which is "silky", it gives a smooth and light texture to it even if the exterior is lightly fried. It also has crispy garlic, shallots and crushed native black pepper.

We are done with the healthy part, it's now time for the lamon part!
Red Ginger - Squid & Pork Fillet w/ Hoisin Pepper Sauce (PHP490)
Squid & Pork Fillet w/ Hoisin Pepper Sauce (PHP490)
I'll start with my favorite, the Squid & Pork Fillet w/ Hoisin Pepper Sauce (PHP490) is delicious! The sauce perfectly complements everything, especially the wood ear mushroom (which is why this dish stands out!). The greens (celery, leeks & mustard leaves) also give a great kick when it comes to the taste. The squid is cooked well, it's not rubbery and boring. The pork is marinated perfectly all throughout and they are quite generous when it comes to the servings. I think this can feed 2 and a half copies of me.
Red Ginger - Gai Yang (PHP390)
Gai Yang (PHP390)
Ah, the Gai Yang (PHP390), if there's one thing I hate the most, it's cilantro. I can't stand the taste of it (again, personal preference). Well, the chicken is cooked well, very tender and moist inside. The garlic and lime combination works, especially when you dig inside the meat.
Red Ginger - Squid w/ Coriander and Kaffir Lime Leaves (php480)
Squid w/ Coriander and Kaffir Lime Leaves (php480)
Aside from my love for shrimps, lobsters, and crabs, squid and octopussies are one of my go-to as well. This Squid w/ Coriander and Kaffir Lime Leaves (PHP480) is grilled to the point that it is cooked and was quickly removed to avoid overcooking leaving a tender grilled squid. The 3 sauces are the creme of the crop as it provides intensity to the flavor depending on your preference: (right to left) Sweet soy sauce with red onions, Sambal belachan with crispy anchovies & calamansi, green chili, and eggplant relish.
Red Ginger - Honey & Tamarind Glazed Pork Belly (PHP450)
Honey & Tamarind Glazed Pork Belly (PHP450)
The Honey & Tamarind Glazed Pork Belly (PHP450)! The pork belly itself is amazing and very flexible, whether it be fried, pakbet, sinigang, and adobo. Now it has a new twist on it Red Ginger Style! Accompanied with the 3 sauces (like the Squid w/ Coriander and Kaffir Lime Leaves), the meat is perfectly grilled to perfection and the combination of honey and tamarind works its magic in and out of the meat. Perfection!
Red Ginger - Char Kway Teow (PHP440)
Char Kway Teow (PHP440)
Putting an end to our eating spree is this southeast Asia-must try. The noodles are stir-fried, al-dente (can I actually say that? lol), the belachan (or shrimp paste) gives it a salty kick on it while the greens and the calamansi balance the spiciness of the sauce, while the topped shrimp gave it a sultry finish.

Overall, it gives justice to Southeast Asian dishes, these just prove that we can still enjoy the food while exploring something new for our taste buds.
