Watami Grill and Sushi Bar in Uptown Mall, BGC - WTF Food Review

Watami Grill and Sushi Bar in Uptown Mall, BGC
Ready for some Japanese goodness?
Watami Grill and Sushi Bar is a Japanese restaurant in Uptown Mall, Bonifacio Global City. Located on the 4th floor of the said mall, it's very easy to find as you will see upfront a familiar Japanese themed exterior right away.

We love Japanese food in general and been wanting to try some katsudon and ramen. The interior itself is fairly small but there are tables outside and the dining space there is much bigger.

The motif is explicitly heavy modern Japanese oriented. The customized hanging Japanese lamp gives everything an exquisite finish. They also have a beverage bar beside the dining area. We sat inside to avoid the loud crowd outside and began browsing their menu.

Watami's menu
Their menu gives a different take on their motif, it gives a more hip vibe rather than being rustic so for it to match their modern Japanese theme. Moving on, I have ordered their Roasted Squid (PHP265) and their special Ramen in Special Pork Broth (PHP395) while my wife ordered Pork Katsu (PHP295). It wasn't that long when our orders arrived in a fair timely manner and we started to dig in.

Roasted Squid (PHP265)
The roasted squid comes with rice and a delicate mayo on the side. The size of the squid is okay, not too small, not too big, just enough to make you eat it right away. If there are two things I like on the roasted squid, it's the mayonnaise (I think it's a combination of mayonnaise and garlic) and the sauce, combined, they unleash a wonderful burst of flavor. The squid is cooked and roasted perfectly, not too rubbery and not too burnt. The sauce is inexplicably good as it gives a piquant sensation in your palate, leaving you wanting more.

We are a big fan of ramen and when I saw that Watami have them on their menu, I did not hesitate to give it a try. For the price of PHP395, I think they can do better with the serving albeit it looks appetizing so we'll give it a pass. We started with its soup which is made of pork broth with a hint of coconut milk which gives it a different texture. The noodles are cooked al dente, although I love my noodles a little bit hard, it's topped with a generous amount of tender pork slices which by the way cuts easily with just my chopstick, ending it with a medium cooked egg it all blends together.

I still feel a pang so I've decided to dig into my wife's order. My daughter Chloe is enjoying the pork katsu. The breading is seasoned and cooked very well as it leaves a crunch tooth after one bite, the pork I guess would be much more delicate if brined. We ignored the sauce that comes with the pork katsu as the main winner for that evening is their house sesame dressing. I fell in love immediately as I combined the side shredded cabbage and the sesame dressing, it becomes a meal itself! I highly recommend that you try it!

What's also good about their pork katsu is the serving size, it's big and with its price, I think it's worth it. Did I mention that it also comes with unlimited rice and cabbage side refills? Oh yes, you heard it right! For PHP295, you'll get this beauty that will surely fill your tummy!

We haven't had the chance to try their sushi (which they're famous for) because we are already in euphoria and our tummy can't handle any more food. Overall, it was a great experience and a good find. We will definitely come back and try out their other menu items! Have you been to Watami Grill and Sushi Bar? Tell us about your experience!
  • Place
    • We love the modern take on the Japanese motif. The place (inside and the outside seats) are well air-conditioned.
  • Service
    • The service is okay, there are some instances that we need to call-out the waiter a couple of times for some request but we let it pass because the food was great.
  • Price
    • Serving is great for the dish that we had (the ramen can do better). Kudos to the unlimited rice and cabbage! That's a winner there!
